Erectile dysfunction probed with engineering tool
Read more ... Like a column collapsing under the burden of a heavy roof, erectile dysfunction is a classical mechanical engineering problem, says a US urologist. Using mathematical models of penis geometry and hydrostatic pressure, doctors can predict when penises will fail – and in which vagina – he says.
The most widely investigated parameter of penile rigidity is intracavernosal pressure (ICP) – the fluid pressure achieved by blood build up in the two expandable "caverns" of the penis. For a healthy man, the erect ICP is between 60 and 90 millimetres of mercury (mmHg), but can drop to just 30 mmHg, in men with erectile dysfunction (ED).
Anti-impotence drugs, such as Viagra, work by relaxing arterial muscles and allowing more blood, and hence more pressure, to build up in the penis.
But Daniel Udelson, a research urologist and professor of aerospace engineering at Boston University, thought that penis geometry - specifically the ratio of width to length - ought to play a significant role in the robustness of an erection against the force of sexual intercourse.
Ancient formula
So Udelson developed a model that would predict the buckling force, based on penis length, circumference and the ease of expandability over a range of ICPs - it is a direct adaptation of 200-year-old column buckling research by Swiss mathematician Leonard Euler.
Udelson tested the model against 57 men with erectile dysfunction. Each was measured by slowly injecting their penises with saline solution until erect. Udelson then applied a force to the tip of the penis until it started to bend, the first sign of buckling.
The model correctly predicted the buckling forces for 80% of patients - forces ranged from about 2 kilograms to just 0.3 kg given a pressure of 50 mmHg. But the buckling force during intercourse doesn't just rely a man's blood flow and penis shape, it also depends on his partner's vagina.
Previous studies have found that the force required enter a vagina, which depends on a vaginal diameter and lubrication, ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 kg. So, "an individual male may exhibit ED with one partner but not with another," says Udelson News by mark

It’s not the black guy Rocking and Rolling on the street corner, it’s not the Jamaican kid with the heavy bass line, it’s not the british kids with the twanging guitars, it’s not the guy with a gun on his album covers shouting to scratched records.
One hit wonders make happy music that fits in perfectly with the current market. Creating a band that will make a quick and sure payoff means not taking too much risk. It has the disadvantage that bland twists on currently existing stuff are produced, however.
It’s easy to look at Paul Graham and think - hey, he’s one of the boys! He’s a hacker, just like us! He cares about the technology! Well, if you ever were put in Paul Grahams position as a partner in an investment portfolio, you would stop being the way you are now. Being an investor means that you are playing a hacking game too, but the object of this hacking game is to make you some money. And to do that, you cannot take 10 risky investments - you have to go with 8 safe investments, and take 2 risky investments. You have to look at trends, and you have to go with the trends. You have to calculate where the biggest chance of the pay off is.
It’s a different mindset, and in its own way, it’s brilliant. A guy running a music label needs to be good at selling bands, not at making or selling music. There is money in a song, but it’s the band that produces the hit. That’s the same thing Paul does - he sells companies. Not products.
In yet another way, Paul is like a record label boss. Just like certain artists with little talent become big with good label bosses and the appropriate marketing aparatus, Paul can create a company just by the marketing machine that surrounds him. Let’s look at the classic example - Reddit. Reddit is nothing! Reddit is just a list of links. Anyone could make reddit. Reddit did not pioneer anything, they just had a different user interface on the same thing digg was doing.
What made Reddit was that Paul Graham drove traffic to it. Reddit is the sum of its users, and Reddit has sane, mature discussion because those are the very people that Paul Graham drove there. Without the Paul marketing, Reddit would not exist.
Like a label boss would market a band without value, and create value on the basis of recognition, Paul has created value for reddit by marketing it.
And it’s a brilliant thing! Paul made a lot of money off this. He gets the business game, and he played it to perfection on Reddit.
We from the downloading generation tend to see Music Bosses as the evil overlords. They are the people who take music and squeeze originality out of it so they can produce something that makes money. But these music bosses are neccesary! They market a type of music and by their marketing, they create a market for this music. Music would be a ragged mess with hundreds of competing mediocre bands all with different variations on the same thing. The music companies pick one of the bands and market it so that everyone focuses on that single band, allowing a lot of money to be made by both the band and the people behind the band.
Paul does the same thing with startups too. It’s not evil, it’s just business.

Disney Targets Pre-Teens with New Social Networking Portal not as good as teenwag!
Read more ... Disney has joined the ever growing list social networking destinations with the launch of Disney Xtreme Digital, targeted directly at Disney’s core market of pre-teens.
The new service, said perhaps lazily by some outlets as being a MySpace clone, comes complete with user generated profile pages that leverage the wealth of Disney’s pre-teen friendly content in terms of allowing customization, as well as offering the standard competitions, video, music, games and networking features. Naturally Disney has also included strong parental controls, that include the ability to limit access access to the various features on the site, including chat.
The service currently opens in beta, with users restricted to the United States only.
The pre-teen marketplace has been ignored to date by most existing social networking sites, the litany of potential, and actual legal issues regarding children under 14 keeping many away. For that very reason though, it’s an online demographic that lacks a lot of serious competition, and holds a wealth of potential for Disney in further expanding the Disney brand online.
From a parents perspective though, I couldn’t help but think that the entire service was nothing more than a constant stream of advertisements for Disney movies and related products. Parents who worry about their children being exposed to marketing messages are not going to like Disney XD.
One can only hope that they don’t mix the content up on the new service, as it appears as if they’ve done recently by exposing children to porn on Comcast. News by mrmr

The Pakistan cricket team’s ‘descent’ into praying rather than playing because of the infiltration of an other-worldly proselytising sect of Islam called the Tableeghi Jamaat (TJ) worried their murdered coach Bob Woolmer so much he was writing a book titled 'Inshallah', TOI has learnt.
The book, due out at the end of March, had been accepted by a South African publisher. It has now been shelved.
Woolmer openly expressed his irritation at the Pakistan World Cup Squad’s pronounced TJ sympathies almost as soon as the team arrived at Montego Bay in Jamaica for the opening ceremony.
The squad’s former media manager PJ Mir confirmed on Tuesday that Woolmer told this to him and team manager Talat Ali with the wailing backdrop of a TJ CD: “While all of us are on our way to the hotel (with the team), can’t you ask them to turn it off?"
Mir said Woolmer’s irritation was sparked after a series of incidents that appeared to underline some Pakistan players’ determination to “make a political statement of their faith.”
Mir, a former Pakistan player who was part of the squad during the first World Cup in 1975, said Woolmer could hardly have failed to notice that his boys appeared to be “concentrating more on a Tableeghi CD rather than talking cricket.”
He added that it was absurd for Pakistan players to say the azaan on the aircraft to the World Cup venue because “Pakistan is a moderate nation, we have a moderate president, a modern prime minister, and it is not right to depict Pakistan like this.”
On Tuesday, Mir's concerns were echoed by Qamar Ahmed, a London-based veteran cricket correspondent, who knew Woolmer for 25 years and has travelled with the Pakistan team for decades to cover eight World Cups, 351 Tests and 667 one-day matches.
He told TOI that Woolmer personally informed him of his forthcoming book, Inshallah , last February.
“He had obviously been watching the Pakistan cricket, its culture and the religious bent. He had seen that some of the boys would call in a substitute for fielding and go off to say namaaz,” said Ahmed.
Mir, who has spent considerable time in London for the last 30 years and now presents a popular programme on the Pakistani TV channel ARY, added in a reference to former captain Rashid Lateef that he was equally “disappointed that a former Test cricketer, who has led the team, should have said there should be a fatwa on me (for saying the players were more interested in praying than playing).”
Mir’s concerns over the rising religiosity of the Pakistani team came as cricket experts and aficionados here recounted jokes that chronicled the Pakistan team’s increasing faith in prayer power rather than player power.
According to one apocryphal joke, alleged to be fact, the team’s half-baked fanaticism was best reflected by captain Inzamam-ul-Haq who responded to an English journalist’s congratulations on the birth of his son with these words: “Thanks to Allah, it’s a team effort.” Scandalous by sanjaya_malakar

Breaking news Officials: Three dead at Kansas City shopping center
Read more ... A man with a gun shot and killed two people at a shopping center in Kansas City, Missouri, and wounded at least two others Sunday before being killed by police, a police spokesman said.
The gunman was killed after police confronted him inside the Ward Parkway Shopping Center, about nine miles south of downtown, shortly after 3:30 p.m.
"It appears that he came to the mall to shoot people," Sanders said. "Whether it was random or not -- we do not know."
Two people were killed and two others were wounded in a parking lot on the west side of the mall by the man, who then carried a long gun into the mall.(Watch a witness describe hearing shots and seeing people flee the mall Video)
"We went inside to the mall and that's when we confronted the man outside the Target store inside the mall and he was shot and killed by the officers," said Sanders, who added that police have no clue as to motive.
Witness Janet Coleman said she saw "a young man with a sawed-off shotgun" in the parking lot being chased by police.
"I could just see a blunt-sized gun bigger than, like a regular .44," she said, adding that she gained her expertise in weapons from watching "a lot of crime TV."
Inside, clothing store manager Lissa Young said "several rounds of gunfire" were followed by two customers who ran into the store and said shots had been fired. She said she immediately locked the doors and ordered the customers to the back of the store, where they waited until police gave them the all-clear.
And shopper Queea Miller said more gunfire took place in the parking lot.
"I was in my truck and the gunman was two cars over from me," she told CNN. She said she saw the gunman shoot in the direction of a Starbuck's coffee shop. "Then, after he stopped, he re-loaded and started shooting again."
She said during the shootings, she and her 18-year-old daughter "lay our seats all the way back and I got to praying. You could hear the shots going off again."
Then police, their guns drawn, began "coming from everywhere," she said.
In addition, in what police say is likely a related incident, a police officer was wounded in a shooting just over two miles from the mall, Kansas City police Sgt. Tony Sanders said.
The officer was shot through one arm, and his injuries were not life-threatening, the sergeant said.
"He had his wherewithal enough to put out a suspect description and direction of travel and vehicle," Sanders said.
And authorities are investigating whether a fourth death is connected to the Sunday afternoon spree.
Sanders said investigators are trying to determine whether an incident in which someone was killed at a home about six miles from the mall was connected to the mall shootings.
Police were combing through the mall Sunday evening to ensure that the gunman had no accomplices. Sanders called the building "a giant crime scene."
"We have hundreds of witnesses who were inside the mall when he came in. We have story employees," he said. "It was a Sunday afternoon at a mall in middle America, so you can imagine it was crowded." Outrageous by mark
